Girls’ health project

The village of Ol Kalou in the Rift Valley is about the size of Hanau. The people are poor and live on about 1.50 USD a day. Many parents cannot send their children to school, if at all, the children go to school until grade 8. Especially girls have an additional handicap once a month: going to school during menstruation when you have no money for sanitary pads is a challenge!  Job prospects are rare, many girls prostitute themselves. About 30 per cent of the prostitutes are girls between 12 and 19 years of age.
In the process, young women become infected with HIV and other STIs, experience sexualised violence and become pregnant unintentionally.

About 10 percent of all pregnancies are teenage pregnancies. Up to the age of 18, 50% of girls are married. After that, education is out of the question.

A group of committed teachers faces the problem and invites the girls to counselling sessions. The girls receive free sanitary napkins, education about HIV and contraception.
