The History
Florence Kioko opened the Imela Medical Center in May 2019. She is a trained community nurse. In addition to providing basic medical care, she primarily carries out educational work in the community of Kayole, a poor suburb of Nairobi. To this end, she has developed programs to train community members and children in schools in personal hygiene, nutrition, vaccination and pregnancy prevention. The Medical Center has a well-equipped pharmacy and three small treatment rooms where laboratory tests are also carried out.
Our Help
We supported the Medical Center with the renovation and furnishings. We bought an ultrasound machine and a sonographer from Nairobi regularly carries out ultrasound examinations for prenatal care. Every month, four new women are admitted to the program. So far, we have looked after over 100 pregnancies at the Imela Medical Center.
Free medical action days (medical camps) are held regularly on the premises of the Imela Medical Center. We are then on site for 1-2 days and treat the patients free of charge. Around 350 women are treated at each camp, which take place twice a year.
We also finance contraception and the treatment of medical emergencies for destitute patients.
In 2022, we started with educational work for girls in the schools around the Imela Medical Center. We advise girls on sexuality and contraception and distribute menstrual hygiene products free of charge.
